Find Your Calm – The Power of Box Breathing

Life can feel like too much, too fast — noise, deadlines, people needing you, and moments where your mind just won’t settle. I know that feeling well. Years ago, stress didn’t just weigh on my mind — it showed up on my skin too. I developed psoriasis, a physical reminder that my body was crying out for peace I wasn’t giving it.

I tried many things, but what truly worked for me was the simplest practice of all: box breathing.

What is Box Breathing?

Box breathing is exactly what it sounds like — you breathe in, hold, breathe out, and hold again, each for a slow, equal count. It’s like drawing a square with your breath. Simple. Gentle. Powerful.

When life feels chaotic, box breathing brings you back to centre. It lowers stress, calms racing thoughts, and helps your body relax deeply. Over time, I found that the daily discipline of a few quiet minutes transformed more than just my mood — it brought my stress down to levels my body could handle. My psoriasis improved dramatically. My mind found its calm level again.

Today, I still use box breathing every single day — whether I have ten minutes or just a few slow breaths in between tasks. It reminds me I am in control of my peace, even when the world feels out of control. The Legend of Skippy currently consists of six separate projects, all of which I manage in my own time. Box breathing keeps me calm and in control.

1️⃣ Inhale for 4 counts
2️⃣ Hold for 4 counts
3️⃣ Exhale for 4 counts
4️⃣ Hold for 4 counts
… and repeat.
